The Beauty of Arjuna Temple is Calling Me

The Beauty of Arjuna Temple is Calling Me
By Amalia Fitri Annisa

At first the coldness could be felt when it touched my cheeks. No matter how thick my sweater was, it successfully slipped through them and mingled with my own body heat. As the sky dropped its tear, it could only become colder and made the mist surrounding became thicker. The cold wind could be heard also, blowing in the distance. That time I felt relieved when I came here in a big group with a guide because I felt I could get lost in this wide place.

It was started by stepping on some stone paths when it was already drizzling. I could see the sky slowly became grayer and darker, and also there were some mist in a distance. I remembered I repeatedly tripped up because of the paths were messy and were getting higher as we walked to that place. Slowly my views were changing from a stone walk path into green luscious scenery.

There were many small temples in that green land and some of them were under repairing. The temples were varied in size,  and the biggest one named Candi Arjuna. Each of the temples has one door only with some steps in front of it. The roof was cone but with stair-like shape on its side. Surrounding the temple, there was rocky ground with some of it covered by green grass, lots of cypress trees standing in line with each other, trumpet flowers in each bushes, and other trees and plants that I couldn’t tell what they were. There was also a long smooth stone path for people to walk around the complex if they didn’t want to step on the grass.

The soft green grass could be felt when I stepped on it. The grass felt so soft that it made me wanted to sit on top of it. It indeed felt so fluff and watery, like sitting on top of a cold but soft sofa. Then I stood back, looked around and I felt the air was getting colder as I move ahead.

The cold air made me felt relaxed after a long journey to come here. The green scenery was something rare to get in the big cities. Sure, the sky was getting grayer and the mist was getting thicker as the drizzle was getting heavier, but that didn’t change the fact that it would only make me feel relaxed and refreshed.

Unfortunately, the schedule was so tight that I couldn’t stay and enjoy myself in there for a long time. When I started to get back and followed the guide, I could feel the cold but soft air touching my cheek, as if they asked me to stay there more. I could only smile and hope for that. “Maybe next time,” I murmur to them, smiling. “See you next time.”

The Withering Flower Blooming in Harsh Condition

The Withering Flower Blooming in Harsh Condition
by Amalia Fitri Annisa

Ajeng Ratna, smiling and
posing with V-sign
Always come on-time and all-prepared, she’s ready to face all kind of subjects even though she knows all of them are hard.

Each time the class started, she always shows her serious face proving that she is ready. She always pays attention to the lecturers and their explanation while taking notes on her binder. No matter how hard the lessons are or how difficult they are explained by the lecturers, she could still make a wide smile after the class ended and make jokes that make us laughing out loud.

“Come on, guys. We have to keep in high spirit! Don’t make it too serious, lha.”

She will always say that after one or some of her friends complained about how hard the lessons were, of course after repeatedly saying her beauty is the one that will make us in high spirit. Seeing no correlation between them, some of her friend who heard it would sigh, shook their head, or even laugh.

Maybe she looks like one of those who born smart without ever studying or those who were always studying like it is their hobby, but no she is not. There is a lot more stories behind someone names Ajeng Ratna Sari.

It was all started in her childhood life. When she was 3, her parents already had a lot of arguing. This was why she decided to spend almost all her times played outside with her friend, and a lot of them were boys. In her childhood until elementary school, she always became buddy with boys. And this was continued until she was 11 years old.

”Since I was in elementary school, I always played with my friends until the dusk came. My parents never looked up or searched for me. Even after I came to house to take a bath and have dinner and then my friends asked me to play again until late, my parents not bother to forbid me and just let me went to play with them.” She said with her usual tone, careless. “Oh, and I just went back at 9 P.M and they didn’t angry or ask me anything.”

Because of it, her grade was always bad but she didn’t take it seriously, nor did her parents. They never asked her to be the best and just wanted her have it.

“They never asked me what I’ve been learned or how was the school at all. Even I ever got bullied in the school because of my bad grades. That’s why in junior high school I wanted to prove them that I could do better and could achieve something.”

Playing seriously
That was at the first semester when she was in 6th grade, her cousin said that the national exam would be very hard to pass it began to scare her to death. She never studied at all and it made her thought that the chance for her to pass the exam is zero. She was so afraid that she spent all one year to study and improve her grade.
“You could say that I changed from a very sociable girl to a shut in girl. But it’s all worthy, my exam result was the highest in my school.”

She was happy for it and hoped her parents would take notice on her, but they still kept busy with their problems. This kept happen until she was in junior high school. At some point, she finally felt lonely when she realized her parents actually not care for her as long as she looked fine physically.

“I just realized it when I was in my junior high. Maybe because from the very first I always play with my friends, and when I actually start to shut myself in to focus on study, it actually makes me feel very lonely.”

Despite felt lonely, she kept focus on learning and getting better. Until on some point she thought that all lessons she learned in junior high were very easy as she felt she didn’t have to learn hard as she did in the last year of elementary school.  Even so, she still hoped that her parents at least paid attention to her. But unfortunately she didn’t get it and the fighting got worse.

Because of that kind of condition she lived in every day, she finally got used to it. She didn’t get bothered and could still focus studying even when her parents started to argue again.

“Yeah, I kind of used to it because, well, it happened almost every day. I just learn to keep focus on myself and ignore them fighting.” Ajeng said while positioning herself. “I still have my friends and my cousin to accompany me whenever I get bored. I spend a lot of fun times with them.”

It’s hard to keep yourself happy in her position, but you still have to get yourself together as Ajeng Ratna did in her life. When we get support emotionally from our family, she couldn’t get it. Many choose a wrong way to find emotional supports as people really need it. But Ajeng can still help herself to grow as a better person and keep improving herself despite lacks of support from her parents.

Each of us has our own problems and we shouldn’t make them as an excuse to blame for having a bad life. As we know that even a withering flower can still keep blooming in a harsh condition. It even asks us to keep happy!

“Everything is going to be alright! Don’t make life too hard, okay? My beauty will make you feel better!”

[Mid-term] Amalia Fitri Annisa - It's Only Four (Short Story)

It’s Only Four
By Amalia F. Annisa
.
If you don’t mind, now I’m going to tell you about my love problem. Pretty strange if I could say, but for me it’s not that weird.

What? Are you sure you want to hear this? If so, then stay and here me out. If not, feel free to disappear right now.

For you who stay, there are four reasons why my love seems can’t be real. And now I will tell you why it seems so.

.
========.========
.

Believe it or not, from the first time I saw him, my heart beat faster as it never happened before in my life. At first I questioned myself, "what happened to me just now?" It didn’t even make any sense. I just met him for the first time and now my heart was beating like crazy. It went worse when he made his way to me and say, “Hi there, are you the one my father has told me before?” I just couldn’t do things better or productive except nodding slowly like an idiot little kid being asked by stranger. My heart beat became uncontrollable (or may I say it became worst?) as I saw him smile and raised his hand to me as if he wanted to grab it warmly, well he did want to. He smiled to me softly when saying this, “I’m your new big brother. It’s nice to meet you.”
.
.
.
Reason one: He’s my big brother now. Can you tell how messed up my love life become?
 ==================================================

.

Our parents seemed not care at all if we share room together. I guessed they thought it would help us to make a bond as soon as possible after they married and decided to live together straightaway. Well, I’m pretty sure they didn’t know that one of their children would end up has a feeling to another. Damn it. I didn’t really care if my mother wanted to marry again with some British man after father left us for years, but to think my father-to-be has a handsome (and very gentle) son on his own is not what I'm expected. I didn’t really think that we would get along. I know I'm an introvert person and like to spend almost of my time alone at home. I rarely get out and socialize with other kids, not even start a conversation or interact with them. They knew me as a quiet person who rarely talk and make a sound. They said that my aura is so bad that to even bully me they didn’t want to. Well, I kind of liked this way of life, even though I felt a great pain of loneliness because of it. But it was much easier not to think others feeling and lived to your own. I didn’t need to worry if someone hated me, rejected me, or cheated on me. It was so painful to even think about that. That was what exactly I thought at first when mother told me her new husband had a son on his own. “Well, well! Look who is going to have a brother! Isn’t that lovely, my dear? Now you will have a friend if you feel sad and need companion!”

Oh how I really hate that idea. Well, it was only at the beginning, though. I remembered how I thought he would feel disgusted knowing he would have a new relative that had a bad aura and really weird. I was so sure he would reject me completely. He would never want to have a contact to someone like me. Those kinds of negative thinking continuously revolved in my head. I grew quite as the time of our day to meet up with my father-to-be came to discuss about their marriage. I didn’t even dare to look up to him. I just kept shut my head down and refused to talk or look at him. I felt so bad to him because I could see that he was a good man for the way he addressed my mom and me, but I couldn’t really pull myself to talk with someone after my long shut in, moreover to a stranger. I never met him, only mother did. Mother told me that they were met when my mother was sent to work in England and he was her person in charge. She worked hard to meet up the company's need where she worked. Even so, she still showed her kind sides to people around her, whether she knew that person or not. In short, that man fell in love with mother, and asked her to marry him. At first mother refused his proposal, but he kept on chasing my mother hundreds of times (a trait that I think he shared with his son) and finally mother accepted his proposal. When I asked why she accepted the man’s proposal and whether she loves him or not, she just said this with soft smile, “You’ll know why after you met him.”

At first I didn’t understand of what mother said, but after I met him I started to get why she said that. He was an earnest person, I knew it. He looked right into mother’s eyes each time he talked to her. His gaze was so passionate and tenderly, yet sincere and serious. But when he turned his eyes on me, my reaction would be turning my head down. I could tell he was concerned of me from the tone he used. He kept asking if I was okay but what I could do was nodding. Now when I think about it again, the way I met my new father is same with the way I met my new brother. Well, like father like son. Both of them have same trait and personalities. I guess it is because they way my new father taught him. They had lived together without any presence of woman. They lost their beloved woman in a car accident when my new brother was only two. Since then, the man raised his only son by himself, trying to fulfill both roles for his son. Fortunately, his son grew up as a fine gentleman, like how he is. I could tell by how he first appeared in front of my eyes. How could such creature exist in the world! My heart beat so fast I couldn’t care less about what happened around me.

That was the first time I was looking right onto someone’s eyes other than my mother. It was him. I forgot that mother and my new father were also there. After I shook his hand softly (without losing any eye contact with him), my new father came to me then petted my head and smile. The same kind of smile that my new brother had each time he smiled at me. “I hope both of you could get along.” That man said that so softly with a tender look. And once again, I could only blushed and shut my head down. It became my habit, you know. And that was the first time I thought, “How could I turn down such request like that?” after being asked nicely. He didn’t exactly ask me to get along with his son but that voice of his could not make me say no to him. Now I realized why I felt in love with my new brother. It was just the same like mother. Me and mother both fell in love with the same kind of men. I felt in love with how he kept insisted to get along with me, even when I didn’t give any kind of response to him. I loved with how he tried to talk to me softly, yet wanted me to respond to what he said. I loved his great effort to make comfortable with him.

I bet my new father did the same to my mother. But I knew my mother could respond well. For being as myself, of course I didn’t have any courage to answer back or respond normally as I rarely said anything. I just kept silent each time he entered our room and tried to start a conversation with me. He always made sure whether I had eaten properly, did my homework, and consistently asked if I got any problems in school or not. I wasn’t used with this kind of attention. He was so sweet to me as he never got bored or angry because of my behavior. Sometimes I wondered why he did even bother to talk to me. Ah how I love him. Now I can even tell him some of my secret (I’m not going to tell you that) as he listened carefully, as if I watched him if he didn’t really hear me. Not only that, now I even can talk to my new father. I don’t have that uncomfortable feeling whenever I near him now. Maybe because I am so closed with his son, I could familiarize myself to him. And I could feel that he began to spoil me to show his gratitude for being accepted by me. I’m not such a cold-heart child, but it makes me hard to express my feeling. He already acted so kind to me and thought me as his own child. Mother also never been so happy in her life (it was our dark times when father left us) because I am being more opened to those men. How could I dishearten their hearts by saying “I'm in love with my foster brother”?
.
.
.
Reason two: Now my parents gave me those kinds of love and attention, how could I love my brother legally without breaking their heart? Well, it’s not like I’m going to marry my real brother; he is still my foster brother, though.
 ==================================================

.

He always smiles at me. No matter how bad his day was, or how worse his mood was. He would always smile. You know that kind of smile? It’s that kind of smile which make any person who saw it immediately think that he or she is so grateful of your existence. And you can tell that right away after you have some doubt before. Yes, he GAVE that kind of smile to me. You can tell how red my face was after he gave that angelic smile to me as he petted my head. Yes, he petted me. Can he tell how hard it was to act normally around him, for god sake? After giving me trouble not to act strange or creepy to him, now he made me have to suppress my wild urge to hug him as he made physical contact. Yes, I got aroused easily when he freely touched me like that. Now I made him sounds so dirty, but well, my imagination thinks so. He actually just touched my hair and smiled at me. What made it worst is that I remembered it as clear as crystal when he said, “Each time I saw your face, your figure, I feel, like, calmer and softer and I surely love that feeling. Would you mind to be here closer to me?” Can you believe he said that? He asked me with a pleading eyes and soft beautiful voice. How could I refuse such request from such man with such face! But did he know that each time I saw him smile I had to stop my wild mind to not to kiss and pounce him? Did he know that I really wanted to pounce on him? Did you think he know, huh?

I doubt he will know or even realize that, even a bit. He is so oblivious (or he is just purely stupid? But I think I might want to say he is cutely stupid) to this kind of things, that somehow it made me cried and relieved for the same time. I have seen some of his gal friends dropped a subtle hint and some even a bit bold of giving hint, but he never realized that. He would always end up misunderstand about it and make the girls angry and cry. I sighed so hard each time I saw that but then I cried when I knew I will just end up the same as those unlucky girl. He won’t ever notice or realize my feeling. But to think that he would know what kind of feeling I had for him, I'm certainly sure that he would be terrified of it and think it is disgusting. Oh, for god sake, no! I really don’t want to think that even for a bit a possibility of him detested me like I wasn’t even a human. No I don’t want to. I just thirst for his love, and he himself, of course.
.
.
.
Reason three: He would feel disgust of me if he knew what kind of things I ever imagined with him. And I just want to DIE if it does happen.
 ==================================================

.

We have been together for many years now. He is now in his 24 and me in my 19. I have kept this love a secret for already nine years. Hurrah for me. Now you know why I'm so desperate to tell this to you. I can’t keep it any longer. Even in this age, we sometimes still cuddle and hug each other when one of us felt sad. These kinds of activities that made me still hope and yearn for his love. I keep telling myself he only sees me as a little kid that he must protect, no more than that. But I can’t. My heart always desires more and it tortures me. It tortures me so much. I couldn't help to sniff his scent each time we hugging. His sweet scent aroused me easily as it slowly weakens my mind and my body but down there it was tingling so much. He successfully made me can’t think clearly as he buried me in his hug and petted my hair softly, tenderly, and lovingly. No word changed between us but our presence could have made our anxiety, sadness or anger disappear. I couldn’t help myself to hug him harder and refuse to let him go. And each time he let go of his arm around me, I feel like my breath has been taken away forcefully from me. I choked; need air as I cried for his love. In a short word, my love could only grow stronger as he is always in my sides. Now, here comes the problem.

I told you before that he is in 24, right? My foster father thought that it was already the time for him to select a suitable woman to accompany him and asked him to consider about marriage. He said that in the middle of dinner with me and mother. After he said that, I could only be shocked in silence and stopped my eating. I lost my appetite all of sudden and wanted to throw up all foods that I had eaten. In fact, I wanted to throw it up to my foster father. How could he say such thing?! We were just fine like this and didn’t need another member of family! Couldn’t he see that brother and I just fine with each other?! I just kept silent and stared at my brother, waited in anxiousness, hoped that my brother would reject the idea blatantly. But my brother only said this after a moment of awkward silence,

“I’ll think of that.”

I could feel my world collapsed right in the moment he said that. Suddenly mother said something I really hate and despise, and that was the first time I ever hated her in my life, “You too, dear. You also have to find a woman after your brother. After all, you can’t always be with him. Let alone he will have a woman to accompany him. I want you to find a good bride too and become a good husband. Don’t repeat your father's mistake.”

I really hate my mother now. She only thinks about her happiness. Does she think that if I marry someone else it will make me happy? The answer is a big NO. Only MY brother could only make me happy. No one else could. It became worse as that stupid old man said something unnecessary, “You could be his best man at his wedding, son. I know your brother will happy too. Since both of you are very close to each other like being glued, no one is suited to be his best man.” My head went blank as I felt my tears swelled up. I didn’t want to think of that! More over about best man! Enough was enough! I ran to my rooms and locked my room. I could hear my brother asked me to open the door now. But right now I don’t want to see his face as he already disappointed me with that kind of answer.

To be exact, that talking only happened four hours ago, but I need some strategies to destroy all those stupid ideas about my brother's marriage. No one is marrying my brother. No one is and no one will. Brother is mine, and no one will ever take him from me.
.
.
.
Last reason: I know we have same gender, but I don’t care.
 ==================================================

.

Now I’ve told you everything. And now you have to help me through this. Did you think I'm going to tell you these without any consequences? Don’t you ever dare think of that! Now tell me, what is the right solution? I will wait for your answer.

[Mid-term] Amalia Fitri Annisa - I Wonder Why... (Poem)

I Wonder Why…
by Amalia F. Annisa
----
Is this what you want?

Jab right into my heart, with your faint voice
Unstoppable tears flow, alongside my bleeding heart
Stop my breathing, against my will
Try to kill me, brutally but slowly

Shatter all dreams to pieces
Tear up all those hopes
Ignore my voice
Lost all we have
Leave the broken me all alone

Loathe you?
Oh please, I wish I could, could
Vanish from this world,
Erase all memories we shared

Years passed by, I still remembered clearly,
On that day you said, as it stabs me,
Unreal for you to still love me, is it.

Wonder why you said that
Because my reason is simple…

Drama: An Angel in Disguise

An Angel in Disguise
By Amalia F. Annisa
Based on T.S. Arthur

Idleness, vice, and intemperance had done their miserable work, and the dead mother lay cold and still amid her wretched children. She had fallen upon the threshold of her own door in a drunken fit, and died in the presence of her frightened little ones.

This woman had been despised, scoffed at, and angrily denounced by nearly every man, woman, and child in the village; but now, as the fact of her death was passed from lip to lip, in subdued tones, pity took the place of anger, and sorrow of denunciation. Neighbors went hastily to the old tumble-down hut, in which she had secured little more than a place of shelter from summer heats and winter cold: some with grave-clothes for a decent interment of the body; and some with food for the half-starving children, three in number. Of these, John, the oldest, a boy of twelve, was a stout lad, able to earn his living with any farmer. Kate, between ten and eleven, was bright, active girl, out of whom something clever might be made, if in good hands; but poor little Maggie, the youngest, was hopelessly diseased. Two years before a fall from a window had injured her spine, and she had not been able to leave her bed since, except when lifted in the arms of her mother.

--
SCENE I
----

The chief is entering the room.
The chief                  : What is to be done with the children?
Farmer Jones          : After considering the matter, and talking it over with my wife, I think I would take John, and do the boy well, now that his mother was out of the way.
Mrs. Ellis                  : I could do much better, I know. But as no one seems inclined to take her, I must act from a sense of duty expect to have trouble with the child; for she's an undisciplined thing--used to having her own way.
The chief                  : Then what about the youngest one?
All                             : (Pitying glances were cast on Maggie)
Villager 1               : Just take her to the poorhouse. Nobody's going to be bothered with her.
Villager 2                 : The poorhouse is a sad place for a sick and helpless child.
Villager 2              : For your child or mine, but for tis brat it will prove a blessed change, she will be kept clean, have healthy food, and be doctored, which is more than can be said of her past condition.
The chief                  : Well, it’s all settled, then.

--
SCENE II
----

There was reason in that, but still it didn't satisfy. The day following the day of death was made the day of burial. A few neighbors were at the miserable hovel, but none followed dead cart as it bore the un-honored remains to its pauper grave.

Farmer Jones          : Come on, John (placed John in his wagon). We have a lot to do. (drove away).
Mrs. Ellis                  : (to Kate with a hurried air) Bid your sister good bye.
Kate                        : Bye, my dear sister (sobbing). I hope you’ll found your own home (walks away, following Mrs. Ellis).

Hastily others went out, some glancing at Maggie, and some resolutely refraining from a look until all had gone. She was alone. Just beyond the threshold Joe Thompson, the wheelwright, paused, and said to the blacksmith's wife, who was hastening off with the rest.

Mr. Thompson       : It's a cruel thing to leave her so.
The blacksmith's wife   : Then take her to the poorhouse; she’ll have to go there. (leaving Joe behind.)
Mr. Thompson       : (stood for a little while then turned back and went into his hovel)
Maggie                     : (with painful effort, raised herself from the bed) O, Mr. Thompson! (cried out, catching her breath) don't leave me here all alone!
Mr. Thompson       : No, dear. (going to the bed and stooping down over the child). You shouldn’t be left here alone.
Mr. Thompson       : (wrapped the child the clean bedclothes, lifted and bore her out into the air and went home)

--
SCENE III
----

Now, Joe Thompson's wife, who happened to be childless, was not a woman of saintly temper or much given to self-denial for others' good, and Joe had well-grounded doubts touching the manner of greeting he should receive on his arrival. Mrs. Thompson saw him approaching from the window, and with ruffling feathers met him a few paces from the door.

Mr. Thompson     : (opened the garden gate, and came in. His arms held the sick child to his breast)
Mrs. Thompson    : (glaring, questioning his husband) What have you there?
Mr. Thompson    : (looking at the child) Wait a moment for explanations, and be gentle. (carried Maggie to the small chamber on the first floor, and laid the girl on a bed)
Mr. Thompson      : (stepped back, shut the door, and stood face to face with his wife in the passage-way outside).
Mrs. Thompson    : You haven't brought home that sick brat! (snapped Mr. Thompson)
Mr. Thompson      : (firmly) I think women's hearts are sometimes very hard.
Mrs. Thompson   : (Surprised, but keep angry) Women's hearts are not half so hard as men's!
Mr. Thompson       : (answered quickly) Be that as it may, every woman at the funeral turned her eyes steadily from the sick child's face, and when the cart went off with her dead mother, hurried away, and left her alone in that old hut, with the sun not an hour in the sky.
Mrs. Thompson     : Well, where were John and Kate—the other children?
Mr. Thompson       : Farmer Jones tossed John into his wagon, and drove off. Katie went home with Mrs. Ellis; but nobody wanted the poor sick one. 'Send her to the poorhouse,' was the cry.
Mrs. Thompson     : Why didn't you let her go, then? What did you bring her here for?
Mr. Thompson       : She can't walk to the poorhouse alone. Somebody’s arms must carry her, and mine are strong enough for that task.
Mrs. Thompson     : Then why didn't you keep on! Why did you stop here?
Mr. Thompson       : It’s because I'm not apt to go on fools' errands. The Guardians must first be seen, and a permit obtained.
Mrs. Thompson     : When will you see the Guardians? (impatience)
Mr. Thompson       : Tomorrow.
Mrs. Thompson     : Why put it off till tomorrow? Go at once for the permit, and get the whole thing off of your hands tonight!
Mr. Thompson       : Jane (firmly), I read in the Bible sometimes, and find much said about little children. How the Savior rebuked the disciples who would not receive them; how he took them up in his arms, and blessed them; and how he said that 'whosoever gave them even a cup of cold water should not go unrewarded.' Now, it is a small thing for us to keep this poor motherless little one for a single night; to be kind to her for a single night; to make her life comfortable for a single night.
Mrs. Thompson     : (did not answer)
Mr. Thompson       : Look at her kindly, Jane; speak to her kindly (softly). Think of her dead mother, and the loneliness, the pain, the sorrow that must be on all her coming life.
Mrs. Thompson     : (did not reply, but turned towards the little chamber the sick-child in)
Mr. Thompson       : Alright then, do as your heart wish. I will go to workshop. (went out to his shop).
Mrs. Thompson     : (nodded slowly, paused, then approached the chamber and went quietly in)

--
SCENE IV
----

Mr. Thompson went to his shop and worked until evening. A light is shining towards the little chamber windows from the house. He followed the path and stopped outside.

Mr. Thompson       : (peeking by the windows)
Maggie                     : (lay a little raised on the pillow with the lamp shining full upon her face).
Mrs. Thompson     : (was sitting by the bed, talking to the child; but her back was towards the window)
Mr. Thompson       : Oh I wish I could know what they are talking about! (muttered) I could see that child’s expression was sad and tender! But I could see nothing of bitterness or pain from that her face (deep breath). Isn’t that a relief? It is like as the weight lifted itself from my heart. (smiles)
Mr. Thompson       : (enter the house with heavy tread to the kitchen)
Mrs. Thompson     : (heard his husband’s footstep, hurriedly come out from the room where she had been with Maggie)
Mr. Thompson       : How soon will supper be ready? (sat on one of the chair)
Mrs. Thompson     : Right soon. (beginning to bustle about)
Mr. Thompson       : Alright then, I'll wait. (went to wash his hands and face the dust and soil of work, left the kitchen then went to the little bedroom.)
Maggie                     : (looked up at him from the bed)
Mr. Thompson       : (examining the child carefully under the lamp light) Your name is Maggie? (sat down and took her soft little hand in his)
Maggie                     : Yes, sir. (quivered)
Mr. Thompson       : Have you been sick long?
Maggie                     : Yes, sir. (quitely)
Mr. Thompson       : Has the doctor been to see you?
Maggie                     : He used to come.
Mr. Thompson       : (Arise his eyebrow) But not lately?
Maggie                     : No, sir.
Mr. Thompson       : Have you any pain? (Concerned)
Maggie                     : Sometimes, but not now.
Mr. Thompson       : When had you pain?
Maggie                     : This morning my side ached, (pause for a while) and my back hurt when you carried me. (faintly)
Mr. Thompson       : It hurts you to be lifted or moved about?
Maggie                     : Yes, sir.
Mr. Thompson       : Does your side ache now? (worried)
Maggie                     : No, sir.
Mr. Thompson       : (relieved, but still concerned) does it ache a great deal?
Maggie                     : Yes, sir; but it hasn't ached any since I've been on this soft bed. (smile faintly)
Mr. Thompson       : (smiles softly and pets the child) the soft bed feels good, right.
Maggie                     : O, yes, sir--so good! (smiles happily)

A little while afterwards, Mrs. Thompson was looking into the room for his husband and the child.

Mrs. Thompson     : Supper is ready. (look at his husband)
Mr. Thompson       : (glanced from his wife's face, then to Maggie’s)
Mrs. Thompson     : She can wait until we are done (said in a low tone, and then pause for a moment) then I will bring her somethings to eat. (exit the rooms)
Mr. Thompson       : (Sighing) Okay then. Will you wait us for a while? My wife will bring you some dinner later.
Maggie                     : (smiles faintly) it’s alright, sir.
Mr. Thompson       : Thank you, dear. We’ll be right back. (pet the child then raise up from the bed; Exit the room)

SCENE V
----

There was an effort at indifference on the part of Mrs. Thompson, but her husband had seen her through the window, and understood that the coldness was assumed. Joe waited, after sitting down to the table, for his wife to introduce the subject uppermost in both of their thoughts; but she kept silent on that theme, for many minutes, and he maintained a like reserve.

Mrs. Thompson     : (suddenly) What are you going to do with that child?
Mr. Thompson     : (stop eating, glance at his wife for a moment) I thought you understood me that she was to go to the poorhouse. (continue his eating)
Mrs. Thompson    : (behave rather strangely at her husband and then dropped her eyes)

The subject was not again referred to during the meal. At its close, Mrs. Thompson toasted a slice of bread, and softened, it with milk and butter; adding to this a cup of tea, she took them into Maggie, and held the small waiter, on which she had placed them, while the hungry child ate with every sign of pleasure.

Mrs. Thompson     : Is it good?
Maggie                   : (paused with the cup in her hand) Thank you, ma’am. They were all delicious (gratefully)
Mrs. Thompson    : (touches and feels very happy but she hides it) well, good then. (exit the room happily)

At breakfast-time on the next morning, Mr. Thompson attempts to open conversation with his wife about Maggie.

SCENE VI
----

Mr. Thompson     : I think it’s about time to step down and see the Guardians of the Poor about Maggie.
Mrs. Thompson     : (surprised, stop for a moment then look at his husband) We can keep her a day or two longer; she is so weak and helpless.
Mr. Thompson       : (tries to tempt his wife) She'll only be so much in your way.
Mrs. Thompson     : (can’t keep collected anymore) I shouldn’t mind that for a day or two! She is a poor thing!
Mr. Thompson       : (smiles) Alright then, we’ll keep her for two days more.

Joe did not see the Guardians of the Poor on that day, on the next, nor on the day following. In fact, he never saw them at all on Maggie's account, for in less than a week Mrs. Joe Thompson would as soon leave thought of taking up her own abode in the almshouse as sending Maggie there.
